Description
A vibrant, cozy homemade orange jam infused with warm winter spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. This pectin-free recipe relies on natural citrus goodness to create a thick, flavorful spread perfect for toast, cheese boards, or holiday gifting. Enjoy a “jar of sunshine” during the chilly months!
Ingredients
Scale
- 4–5 large juicy oranges (peeled, pith removed, and chopped)
- 1 large lemon (peeled and juiced)
- 2 ½ cups granulated sugar (adjust based on fruit sweetness)
- 1 cup filtered water
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp ground nutmeg
- ¼ tsp ground cloves
Instructions
- Prep the Fruit: Wash oranges and lemon thoroughly. Peel them and carefully remove the white pith to avoid bitterness.
- Chop: Chop the fruit into small pieces, ensuring all seeds are removed.
- Combine: In a large heavy-bottomed pot, combine the chopped fruit, sugar, and water. Stir gently.
- Boil & Spice: Bring to a boil over medium heat. Once boiling, stir in the ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
- Simmer & Thicken: Reduce heat and simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. Use the “cold plate test” to check if it has reached the desired thickness (or 220°F on a thermometer).
- Jar: Pour the hot jam into sterilized glass jars, leaving 1/4 inch headspace. Seal immediately.
Notes
- Pith is key: Ensure you remove as much white pith as possible to keep the jam sweet rather than bitter.
- Sterilization: Always use sterilized jars to ensure the jam stays fresh for up to a year in storage.
- Consistency: The jam will thicken further as it cools in the jar.
