- 8–10 hot dog buns, cut into 1-inch pieces
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- 1 lb hot dogs, sliced into ½-inch rounds
- 2 (15 oz) cans chili (bean-less or minimal beans preferred), or 3-4 cups homemade chili
- 3 cups shredded cheddar cheese (from a block for best melt)
- Optional toppings: diced red onion, sliced jalapeños, fresh cilantro
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- In a large bowl, toss the bun pieces with the melted butter until evenly coated. Spread the buttered bun pieces evenly in the prepared baking dish.
- Sprinkle 1½ cups of the shredded cheese over the bun layer.
- Evenly spread the chili over the cheese and bun layer.
- Scatter the sliced hot dog pieces over the chili.
- Sprinkle the remaining 1½ cups of shredded cheese over the hot dogs.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden brown.
- Let stand for 5-10 minutes before serving. Garnish with desired toppings.
